Course Description

Explores key approaches to developing and strengthening literacy skills in inclusive elementary classrooms through focus on best practices in language arts, social studies, and art instruction. Students acquire essential pedagogical content knowledge and skills for the teaching of these important content areas through the study of research- based best practices. Focuses on methods and strategies shown to be effective for teaching reading, writing, speaking and listening in K-6 classrooms. Special emphasis is placed upon expanding elementary students' historical, geographic and civic understanding and planting the seeds for global awareness. Multisensory approaches to teaching content are integrated throughout. Also discusses the yoking together of critical thinking skills and creativity and how literacy may serve as the foundation upon which art instruction is based.
